Antioxidant activity of fulvic acid: A living matter-derived bioactive compound

The scavenging properties of fulvic acid, in comparison to reference compounds, was investigated. Fulvic acid was found to scavenge a range of free radicals in a concentration-dependent way. The study concluded that fulvic acid was a good candidate for use ‘as an accessible source of natural antioxidants’.

Complexation of Furosemide with fulvic acid extracted from Shilajit: a novel approach

Furosemide (FSM) was complexed with fulvic acid and the effect on the aqueous solubility, dissolution rate and permeability was investigated. Results found a 23-fold increase in solubility of FSM when complexed with FA. In addition, 86.9% of the drug was released in 60 minutes, versus 3% in the same period without FA. Finally, the permeability was improved by 10 times concluding that FA was able to significantly enhance the bioavailability of FSM.

Effect of fulvic acids on the electrolytes physiology in vertebrates

The behavior of the mineral ions, iron and iodine, when they are escorted by fulvic acids was investigated in mice. In the presence of FA, iron was entirely fixed in red blood cells and iodine fixed in the thyroid gland, both by factors larger than two, compared to when FA was not present. This suggests that the ingestion, fixation and elimination of mineral ions in vertebrates is a dynamic process greatly accelerated when they are escorted by fulvic acids.

Inclusion of solid state aspirin with fulvic acid: dissolution, permeability, stability and preliminary pharmacological studies

Aspirin, a low water soluble compound with poor bioavailability, was complexed with fulvic acid to investigate dissolution and permeation properties. The release profile (dissolution rate) of aspirin increased from 31.32% in 30 minutes without FA, to 99.7% in 25 minutes when complexed with FA. The permeation of the FA-Aspirin complex across an everted rat gut sac was 8 times greater than compared to aspirin alone. As such, FA was concluded to be beneficial in enhancing the bioavailability of aspirin.
